Mykhailo’s Story: First Steps Toward Himself

This is the story of 15-year-old Mykhailo, who, after a forced relocation, found himself in a new environment — without friends, without his familiar life, and with a strong sense of social isolation. It is a story about how the support of a community helped him find his voice.

In 2022, Mykhailo and his family left Druzhkivka due to active hostilities and relocated to Khmelnytskyi. The sudden change of environment and remote learning led to social isolation, difficulties in communicating with peers, and a decline in motivation to study. He often appeared withdrawn, struggled with self-doubt, and lacked confidence in interacting with new people.

Participation in the “SviTY” Program

Mykhailo has been participating in the program since August 2022. Through group activities and the debate club, he gradually developed skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork. He learned to express his opinions, build arguments, and interact effectively with peers.

The support he found at “SviTY” gave Mykhailo a sense of acceptance and belief in his own abilities. His interest in the history of Ukraine became an additional resource for self-expression and strengthening his identity. Over time, he took on more responsibility — growing from a participant to a debate judge and a volunteer at the center — which further strengthened his confidence and sense of self-worth.

Even while continuing his studies online, Mykhailo no longer feels isolated. He actively attends the “SviTY” space, helps organize events, and is an important part of the community. For the second year in a row, he has taken part in city debate tournaments, and in 2026 he received the “Best Speaker” award in the first round. From a quiet and withdrawn teenager, he has grown into a confident young man who has found his voice and knows how to use it.

“Participating in the SviTY charitable center program helped me find support, believe in myself, and understand that I am not alone. Here, I met people with whom I feel part of a true community,” — Mykhailo.
